It's All about Remembering 2019

So this is it! 2020 is just around the corner. 2019 is an important year in the sense that there are many anniversaries and celebration taking place in China. What are your most memorable events? What are your songs, movies, books of the year? How many goals have you achieved and how many more to accomplish in 2020? Besides reflecting on the past year, summarising the gains, losses and regrets, we will also be pondering over a philosophical issue in regard to retaining memory. Will you choose to give your whole memory to AI? How do you decide which memories are more important than others? And, despite its cliché, new year’s resolution will go on the stage before the final curtain.

Agenda

19:20-19:30 Arrival & Mingling

19:30-19:40 Opening & Self-Introduction

19:40-20:10 Story Sharing: My Memory about 2019 我的2019

20:10-20:30 Thematic Discussion: Gains, Losses and Regrets about 2019

20:30-20:50 Semi-structured Debate: Should We Give Our Memory to AI

Date and Time: 30/12/2019 19:30-21:00

Attendees: 13 Nanxian, XH Fang, Janny, Tony, Rani, Hansen, Mike, Michael, Sheldon, Vincent, Eli

Archive files: 3 photos

Minutes taken by Janny
Read More

To Pay or Not to Pay

Although the internet has made it so much easier to find what you want to know, these days, people are increasingly willing to pay for quality content online. Are you a subscriber of Apple Music or Netflix? How many online courses have you paid for? Should we pay for knowledge? What is the underlying causes of the booming knowledge economy? In the same line, should museums and libraries charge for admission? Do you think the disadvantages of charging people for knowledge outweigh the advantages? Or do you agree with those people who argue for ‘No pay, no gain.’ theory. That is to say people tend to take free things less serious. This Saturday, let’s have a good catch-up session and talk about the to pay or not to pay dilemma.

Some Concluding Remarks from the Session

1. There is NO such thing as a free lunch. Products or services that appear to be free always have a cost to someone, even if it not the individual receiving the benefit. In many cases, free things don’t cost you nothing (think about your time, privacy and attention). Stay vigilant.

2. The concept of ‘free’ is open to interpretation. Free can imply cheap, causal, informal and insignificant. Free can also indicate invaluable, noble and charitable.

3. Sometimes, ‘no pay, no gain’ applies. For instance, paying a subscription to online courses actually motivates you to study.

4. Public libraries and museums should be free because they share a mission of education and cultural transmission and it is the government’s responsibility to guarantee that every citizen has free access to those facilities. Arguably, we’ve...Read More

Hey guys, it has been more than a month since we spoke. Do you miss it? Miss it? Miss it? We are pleased to announce that we are back with a special event this Sunday afternoon. We are going to have an experimental learning session at the exhibition hall entitled 'The Splendid Civilisation of Ancient Fujian', Fujian Museum.

The activities employ a 'see it, say it, sorted it' approach to practice your spoken English. We will start with a 15 minute walk-around in the exhibition hall, identifying an object, a display, a historical figure or a period of time you would like to explore. Then, we will join a guided tour (in Chinese) with a senior and professional volunteer at Fujian Museum. Hopefully, with the guidance of Mr Yang and the English scripts, you will be able to create your own tour guide speech.

It is slightly challenging but would be extremely helpful in enhancing your ability to think on your feet. Plus, you would learn a lot about local history with an expert. So please do join us if you are interested.

Date and Time: 06/10/2019 19:30-21:00

Participants: 11 Ms Lin Cai, Mr Shouhui Yang, Janny, James, Skylar, Fiona, Sherry Pan, Daisy Chen (+2),

Archive files: 6...Read More

Fuzhou A+ Toastmasters Club 福州A+英语演讲俱乐部

Lex Lin 156 5903 7780

Dreamworld Toastmasters Club

Leon Li 139 0590 0190

First Fuzhou Toastmasters Club

Rhett Tan 139 5030 3728

Fuzhou Shining Stars Toastmasters Club

Charlotte Xie 177 5903 6956

Fuzhou Leadshow Mandarin Toastmasters Club

Johnson Ye 189 0693 2350

SEED Toastmasters Club

Gentle Zhan 188 0500 8730

Linking Mandarin Toastmasters Club

Ray Cao 132 8331 5434

Reid 183 5911 6172
Read More

Introductory Message

When an individual encounters one another, we become human. In its broadest sense, interpersonal relationship refers to all kinds social associations, connections, or affiliations between two people or more. It’s said that during the entire life, we will meet more than 8 million people in this planet. We get along with some right off the bat; some others remain no more than acquaintances after a lifelong knowing.

Love, friendship, family bonds and professional relationship, which one tops your relationship agenda? Do you believe in fate or destiny? Do you think you will fall in love at first sight? What do you think of the hedgehog's dilemma? Is there a pure friendship between males and females? How many contacts do you have on WeChat? How do you manage your network? Which factors are key to relationship maintenance? Does the technology makes relationship building easier or more difficult?

This week, it’s all about interpersonal relationship!

Date: 31/08/2019 19:30-21:00

Attendees: 11 Nanxian, Janny, Sandy, Celia, Tony, Mark, Skylar, Gin, John, Michelle, Guest 1

Archive Files: 2 Photos

Minutes taken by Janny
Read More

Very Chinese Universities

Introductory Message

As the dog days coming to an end, the new semester of most Chinese universities is on the way. Thousands of students are starting off for further study as freshmen. No matter you are a freshman-to-be or a graduate-for-years, feel free to share your stories and thoughts about the very Chinese universities this week. We want to listen about your routine, your major or the campus culture in your university. If you have been studied abroad, you are encouraged to compare the way everyone thinks in universities with different cultural backgrounds. Meanwhile, we appreciate your voice on several problems. How do “university” and “college” differ? Why Chinese people value the 985, 211 or “Double-top” universities so much? Which is more important between “universal development” and “professional experience” in universities? What can you learn apart from major courses and exam strategies?

Hosted by Haber

Date: 24/08/2019 19:30-21:00

Attendees: 13 Nanxian, Janny, Lin, Jingru, Haber, Susan, Mark, Dragon, Skylar, Michael, Joan, Mike, Jayson

Archive Files: 4 Photos, 1 Signup Form

Minutes taken by Janny
Read More
