From habitat protection and anti-commercial whaling to debates about eating dog meat and keeping peacocks, animals seem to get increasingly more consideration in the 21st-century global culture. Human-animal interactions are diverse, complicated and idiosyncratic. Our ancestors fought with fierce animals to survive. In egalitarian, hunter-gatherer societies, people brought animals into the family and kept temporarily before being eaten or sacrificed. We stroke and cuddle dogs at home. We travel a long way to see giant panda. This week, we are going to explore our entangled relationship with non-human animals.
Why are some animals considered as food, providing nutrients and energy to support our daily life, while consuming others is not acceptable? Why so many species that have lived with us have never been domesticated? Should human go veganism? Hope these discussions will shed some light on the emotional, psychological, and physical interactions of people and animals, thereby promoting the health and well-being of both.
