Introductory Message
Have your heard of Aojiu Festival (literally 拗九 means bending the nine)? It is a traditional Chinese Filial Piety Festival unique to Fuzhou. In this week's English Corner, we aim to achieve two main goals. First, with the assistance of folk history experts, we want to form an intriguing and accurate account, introducing the festival to the world. Second, we would like to invite an intergenerational discussion regarding the concept of 'filial piety', a highly important and central Confucian virtue in social ethics.
正月廿九在即，本周我们要聊的是拗九节。在英语角的前半部分我们将讨论如何用英文把“拗九”、“掼九”、“明九”、“暗九”这些复杂概念解释明白，如何用地道的说法将“拗九粥”、“太平面”这些有趣的习俗生动地传达。下半场的内容则是对节日背后孝道内涵的探讨，我们希望能通过代际间的对话与交流为中华传统价值中的“孝”与“顺”作出当代的注脚。
