Gaokao, the The National College Entrance Examination in China, is notorious for its fierce competition and decisive influence on Chinese students' personal and academic lives. Similar to its predecessor - the Imperial Civil Examination, for many Chinese, especially those from less privileged backgrounds, succeeding in Gaokao is their only chance to step up the social ladder and alter their fate.
