Waste Sorting 101

· 101

Introductory Message

Waste-sorting is the new fashion. Following China’s waste-sorting pioneer Shanghai, Fuzhou's compulsory waste sorting begins. What is your attitude to this policy? Do you feel confused when facing a garbage? Our EC regular Sherry has kindly put some information together and would like to share her knowledge and opinions with us in an interactive manner.
In fact, the Chinese government's efforts to promote the waste-sorting systems date back to 2000. Trails were laughed in eight cities across China. However, according to a survey of 3,600 people living in major Chinese cities, nearly three-quarters of urban residents were unable to correctly identify how to sort their trash. Hopefully, we can have a constructive discussion this weekend, figuring out some feasible solutions to implement the policy.

There are FIVE categories of materials citizens want to dispose of, namely

  1. Household Food Waste
  2. Other waste
  3. Recyclable
  4. Harmful Waste 有害垃圾 (a.k.a. Hazardous waste)
  5. Large Garbage 大件垃圾 (a.k.a. household bulky waste)

An interesting observation is that when something is recyclable, it is not a waste. So you can call them recyclable items.

Compared to the Shanghai system, whose definitions of dry and wet waste are very confusing, I think this classification is relatively easier to follow.

If you do see a different version in your community, please share it here so that we can compare notes. Cheers.
